Yesterday we visited a friend of my friend in Al Noor Hospital. He had undergone a heart bypass surgery. We saw many medical tubes connected on his body, some bigger pipes runs over his chest and thinner tubes sticking on his arms. He was still weak but conscious and smiling, he tried to speak to us, although he is not allowed to talk and move yet because his wound is still fresh. But overall he is slowly recovering from the operation, we prayed over him and his family before we left him with his wife in the ICU.
Curious, I checked more about heart disease and about bypass surgery...
<normal heart>
<blocked artery>
<vein cut from body>
<vein bypass blockage>
<additional blockage>
They say prevention is better than cure so here are the suggestions from medical experts to prevent heart disease and avoid undergoing bypass operation or other heart surgeries.
1. Quit Smoking
Chemicals, nicotine and carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke or tobacco can damage the heart and blood vessels, leading to narrowing of the arteries that can ultimately lead to a heart attack.
2. Exercise for 30 minutes daily.
Regular, daily exercise reduces stress and lessen risk of fatal heart disease.
3. Eat a heart-healthy diet
Eat foods that are low in fat, cholesterol and salt like fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products, beans, other low-fat sources of protein and certain types of fish also can reduce your risk of heart disease. Following a heart-healthy diet also means drinking alcohol only in moderation.
4. Get regular health check-ups
High blood pressure and high cholesterol can damage your heart and blood vessels. Get medical screenings to know whether you have these conditions and whether you need to take action.
